CHOOSING AND MAINTAINING YOUR MATERIAL:
Selecting just the right Material may be one of the most difficult decisions you will have to face during the fabrication and installation process. All varieties of Natural Stone have been used for countertop surfaces.

Here is a brief overview:
Granite undoubted the most popular stone type used in countertop applications. Granite is some of hardest of the Natural Stones, offering high levels of resistance to abrasion and scratching. The primary minerals in granite are resistant to virtually all chemicals commonly found in residential settings; however, some granites may be vulnerable to acids.
Marbles, Serpentines and Onyxes are known for their aesthetic appeal, pronounced veining and often bold colors. Marbles are vulnerable to either abrasion or chemical attack. When used as countertop applications, attacks occur most commonly from ordinary kitchen utensils. The use of cleaners containing abrasives must be avoided. Acid solutions can permanently etch the surface of the material (i.e, lemon juice, tomatoes, vinegar).
Slates have high resistance to chemicals and can been seen as chemistry lab tops. Slates have limited hardness and like Marbles, are vulnerable to scratching.
Limestone and Travertines have the same make up as Marble. Abrasion can be a concern, particularly if the stone has a polished finish. Many varieties of Limestones and Travertines have a high absorption rate.
